The usability design community is an active community, generating content on an ongoing basis. This does not mean that you need to adopt any new approach. Some trends or new technologies will not have a direct application in your projects, but they will help you better understand how to find solutions to other problems you may find. Be aware of trends and analyze them critically on whether they could help you achieve your design goals better. Some trends will end up being so widespread that they will become part of regular user expectations. So, the sooner you know about them, the better you can experiment and make your own evaluations.
