5.1 Introduction
In recent years there has been signicant progress in the develop-
ment of advanced computer-based learning environments that
interact with learners, monitor their progress, and provide individu-
alized guidance and feedback. ese systems are successfully mak-
ing the transition out of the research laboratory and into widespread
instructional use. For example, the mathematics tutors developed by
Carnegie Learning have been employed by nearly 500,000 students
