BEAT is designed to over-generate, producing nonverbal behaviors
at every point in an utterance that is sanctioned by theory. us atti-
tudes conveyed by an animated agent are eected primarily by reduc-
ing the number of suggested nonverbal behaviors, as appropriate. For
example, in a warm stance (high immediacy), fewer gaze away sug-
gestions are generated, resulting in increased gaze at the interlocutor,
whereas, in the neutral stance (low immediacy), fewer facial anima-
tion (eyebrow raises and head nods) and hand gesture suggestions are
