Etiquette is a lens through which to view interactions between humans
and computers, or more generally, between humans and machines.
Etiquette is essential in all cultures to facilitate the establishment
of trust, develop relationships, and support eective and produc-
tive interactions with other people. Etiquette is equally essential for
enabling people and computers to do the same. When we interact
with other people, it deeply engages cultural, psychological, neuro-
logical, and physiological aspects of our make-up; perhaps it should
not be surprising if similar phenomena are evoked when we interact
