This is the simplest type of deployment, where the backend is the S3 Storage. It exposes the NFS protocol to the clients. The disk that is connected to the storage gateway is used to hold the data for the amount of time the data is not stored in the backend and for the frequently accessed data.
The backend connection could be on VPN, Direct Connect or even the internet. Since the S3 endpoint is SSL encrypted, the data encryption in motion is taken care of. The S3 buckets can be encrypted on the server side, thereby securing the data at rest. We could allow Amazon to manage the keys using S3 or the Key Management System (KMS).
