As the name suggests, these systems detect or protect against intrusion attempts made over the network. These devices can be at the network perimeter, called Network IDS (NIDS), or on the hosts (servers) as Host IDS (HIDS).
The systems use a combination of signature-based detection methods and analysis. Some examples of IDS and IPS systems are TippingPoint, Snort, Suricata, and so on.
