So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
GRE
GRE stands for Generic Routing Encapsulation and it is possibly one of the first overlay technologies to be created. Originally, it was created to standardize the layer 4 and layer 3 protocols.
Early in the 1990s, there were several stacks available, for example, TCP/IP, SPX/IPX (from Novell), and Apple talk, among several others. This was a time when ISPs decided to standardize to ensure interoperability.
The individual data centers could be using any protocol, the physical network will not get impacted or even see those packets, as they will get encapsulated using the GRE protocol.
