These systems are used to allow/disallow the traffic between trusted and untrusted networks and they sit at the perimeter of a network. These networks also help in terminating an IPSEC connection between two sites, or even for remote access (remote access VPN).
The firewalls are normally stateful and support deep packet inspection for some protocols such as FTP, H323, and RPC. The recent firewalls now add features of other products such as IDS/IPS and antivirus, and are therefore called Unified Threat Management (UTM) devices. Some firewall examples are Cisco ASA, Juniper SRX, FortiGate, Check Point, and so on.
