Optimizing meshes
Errors in meshes can create an experience that is less than optimal. Remember, the system updates itself all the time so problems will go away eventually, given sufficient time and enough scans. Some errors, such as the ones caused by IR-unfriendly materials, will persist no matter how many scans are done. You could take care of this in your app.
Removing holes sounds like a good plan. If you have found a set of meshes that are somewhere between 1.5 and 2 meters below the user's eye level, you may safely assume that that is the floor. If you find a hole there that is not big enough to hold a staircase, you can decide to fill that hole with a new mesh.
