I have to say: the speech recognition works extremely well. In the past, I have worked on other systems that utilized speech and they always had problems. You needed to train the devices to recognize your voice and even then, it was a hit-or-miss game. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it did not.
With the new Cortana-based system we have a pretty reliable system in place. This is helped a lot by the placement of the microphones in the device. Remember, we have four of those, placed in such a way as to focus on the area just in front of your mouth. This means other sounds can be filtered out and the device will only pick up your voice commands, not those of your co-workers who find it funny to shout, Hey Cortana, ...
