When we need spatial sound in a computer program, we are faced with one technical limitation. We only have two speakers. One for the left ear, and one for the right ear; that's it. For years, this has been considered enough-- with two speakers, we can create stereo sounds by changing the volume of the sounds for each ear. Along with using the Doppler effect, we can use this to simulate the effect of a passing car. However, as you understand by now, this is not enough. We do not live in a two-dimensional world, so we should not use two-dimensional sounds.
