The system relies on the reflection of infrared light to work reliably. Some surfaces, however, are very bad at reflecting this light that is emitted from the depth sensor. I once had to give a demo at the board room of a large bank. This demo took place in a beautiful room that contained a huge black marble conference table. No matter what I did, I could not get the device to recognize this area. In my surface mapping, it appeared as a black hole in my virtual universe. Black marble is very bad at reflecting infrared light so the system will think there is nothing there.
Mirrors and windows can be troublesome also. I have had mixed results with these but I found that reflective surfaces work when scanned ...
