So far, we have taken a look at audio sources that are in a horizontal plane around us. However, we also have the vertical plane. How does that work?
In general, we use head movement somewhat to listen to the direction when it comes to sounds coming from above or below us. We also tend to notice if sounds are echoed from our shoulders--this would indicate a sound source above us; or sounds tend to be muffled slightly by our bodies, leading us to understand the sounds we hear are coming from below.
To be honest, we are not very good at determining the direction of a sound on the vertical plane. We can to some extent, but nowhere near as good as on the horizontal plane.
