Tripwire
Tripwire is an application that watches your system for changes. The program has been available for some time, first under a GPL-like license, and then as a commercial product, and it is again being made freely available to the Linux community (thanks to companies such as Caldera Systems, Red Hat, and others).
Tripwire, after it is ready, will be offered by Caldera and Red Hat, and possibly even by Debian. It might not be immediately available, but it will be worth installing when it is available.
Tripwire allows you to specify which files and directories you want to watch for change. You might think that RPM offers this facility in its verify function, and in a way it does, but Tripwire does things that RPM cannot.
