Overview of Operation
Before diving into the configuration of the Apache Web server, it helps to have a basic understanding of its operation on your machine. A Web server responds to requests made to it using the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). This protocol is a simple one that primarily allows clients to request documents from a server. The HTTP protocol also allows clients to provide information back to the server for interactive operations. Because the Web server uses this protocol, the actual server daemon program is called httpd.
