It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Ports
Now that you have the basics of IPs and how they work, one more concept must be understood to complete the picture, and that is how and where ports fit in.
When dealing with information passing from one computer system to another, information passes between a server application and a client application. Each server program will have a default port that it binds to (listens on) for requests coming from a client. The client is built to send requests to the default server port.
