Mezirow’s cognitive-rational approach to transformational learning is based, in part, on the work of Paulo Freire. According to Mezirow (2000), adult education should lead to empowerment. Knowledge is created from interpretations and reinterpretations in light of new experiences. Mezirow (p. 7) states
