TIM GALLWEY: THE INNER GAME

Tim Gallwey’s book The Inner Game of Tennis (1974) described a new approach to mastering tennis. Gallwey’s approach soon became a metaphor for approaches to many activities, including other sports, aspects of business, and stress reduction. His premise, which has roots in eastern philosophies and meditation, is based on visualization and nonjudgmental observation of what is happening in the moment. It is the process of trying, competing, self-criticizing, and self-analyzing that holds an individual back in any performance. According to Gallwey, the inner game methodology involves three principles: nonjudgmental awareness, trust in one’s own self, and the exercise of free and conscious choice.
