The Self-Regulation Empowerment Program (Cleary & Zimmerman, 2004) is an application of social-cognitive theory and research. In this program, the self-regulated learning coach teaches students to use Zimmerman’s cyclical feedback loop of self-regulation (2000). Students discover how to apply learning strategies and positive self-motivation techniques.
Another promising approach for coaching students toward self-directed learning is positive education (Seligman, 2008), which involves teachers coaching students to apply principles of positive psychology—cultivating positive emotion, character traits, and resilience—to strengthen their learning experiences.
