DESIRE, FEAR, SELF-BELIEFS, AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO SPIRITUALITY

As human beings we tend to share certain needs and desires. At the deepest level these include the desire to be loved, recognized, and seen for our accomplishments (Maslow, 1964); the desire to engage in work that is fulfilling and joyful (Csikszentmihalyi, 1990); and the desire to be free from fear and to find purpose in life (Seligman, 2002). Often our inability to achieve what we desire results from fear, and underlying that fear is a belief about ourselves—that we are not good enough, not up to the task at hand, not deserving, not lovable.
