THE NATURAL STEP
The concept of the natural step emerged as a response to the way a cell works as a system. Robèrt, a Swedish scientist, examined how a cell works to maintain health and prevent sickness. He went on to ask whether it would be possible to create a framework that mimicked the efficiency and sustainability of a cell. The framework became known as the natural step framework (Robèrt, 1991). Also known as the framework for strategic sustainable development, this builds on science and draws from many disciplines to create a plan that allows researchers to measure change toward sustainability.
