It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

Although it is completely technical compared to the usual work of a system administrator, understanding the hardware components in general, and being able to identify the steps in the startup process in particular, have tremendous benefits. This is because it helps you in troubleshooting hardware-related problems, and so keeps downtime to a minimum.
