High availability (HA) is a characteristic of a system that never fails, thus being available at all times. However, that is possible only in an ideal world. In our world, the high availability standard is 99.999%. Lately, the standard of 99.9999% has taken its place too (see Table 8.1) in business continuity. To achieve such a standard, it is required to have numerous parameters in place. Thus, from backup to fault tolerance, from resilience to reliability, all storage medias are required to be operational so that the system as a whole is highly available.
