Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is a communication technology that encrypts the communication channel between a website on a web server and a browser on a computer. The browser connects to a secured website with SSL through the HTTPS protocol that operates on port 443. In such a secure infrastructure, certificates play an important role in encrypting all transmitted data. Certificates are used mutually by the website and browser in negotiating a secure session between browser-to-server or server-to-server communication as shown in Figure 5.10:
