The idea behind the concept of data deduplication (dedup) is to provide disk space savings. Data deduplication is a technique for removing duplicated data from a dataset, thus storing a single copy of identical data on a disk. It first analyzes data to identify duplicated data in the dataset, then the original file is stored in the storage media while the duplicated files are replaced with a reference that points to the original file.
