As discussed previously, a certificate is responsible for securing the communication channel between a website and browser. As such, the certificate, known also as the digital certificate, is an electronic document that ensures that entities can exchange data securely on the internet. Usually, certificates are issued by a secure entity known as a Certificate Authority (CA) as shown in Figure 5.11. This infrastructure uses Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), which uses certificates to prove the ownership of the public key:
