The disk controller is an electronic circuit that resides on a hard disk, as shown in Figure 8.5. It performs operations such as spinning disks, moving heads for reading and writing, and transferring data from and to RAM. Unlike the disk controller, the host bus adapter (HBA) controller is an electronic board that is integrated with or attached to the motherboard of the server so it can connect the storage system to the server.
