Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations, Enterprise edition uses Azure SQL or SQL Server 2016 for the data layer. Separate databases are used for primary transactions, reporting services, management reporter, and Power BI reporting.
The following diagram shows the different databases used in Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations, Enterprise edition and their purposes. As shown in the diagram, the primary read and write workload of Dynamics 365 for Operation can either use Azure SQL or SQL server, depending on the customer deployment model. Cloud deployment uses Azure SQL as the primary database, while for on-premise, SQL Server 2016 is used.
