Developing data upgrade script for custom schema changes

If you have done upgrade project in the earlier Dynamics AX version, for example, AX 4.0 to AX 2009 or AX 2009 to AX 2012, you might already be familiar with data upgrade scripts. Data upgrade scripts (Release update X++ classes) are similar in Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations. These are business logic to transform and update earlier version data to match the new version application schema. The following are the scenarios when you need to write data upgrade script for your custom code:

  • Change the name of a table or field
  • Delete a table or field
  • Add or change unique indexes or change a non-unique index into a unique index
