The feeder cables provide the links from the central office to the local subscriber area, and then the distribution cables carry on from there to the customer sites (as depicted in Figure A-4. Since the subscriber loop system is usually installed before all the customers are connected, there will be unused distribution cables. The common practice is to connect a twisted pair from a feeder cable to more than one distribution cable, and these unused distribution cables are called bridged taps.
