In traditional processors, shown in Figure 3-6, instructions and data are stored in a single memory area, processed in the processor core, through the address bus and the data bus. In a simple implementation of this architecture, the processor takes one instruction cycle to make an access to memory without either a read or write operation. This approach is known as the Von Neumann architecture. While this architecture is sufficient for many systems today, it is inadequate for processor-intensive, real-time applications.
