As of this writing, the industry is migrating to two protocol suites to support VoIP. They are the H.323 recommendations published by the ITU-T, and the Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP), published (in the draft stages) by the Internet Engineering Task Force.
H.323 and MGCP are not "stand-alone" specifications. They rely on many other supporting protocols to complete their operations. The approach taken in this chapter is to concentrate on the core H.323 and MGCP operations, and explain the supporting protocols in the context of H.323 and MGCP.[1]
