EVALUATING THE FACTORS IN PACKETIZED VOICE

Now that we have a general understanding of the Internet attributes, as well as the Internet protocol suite, it is appropriate to evaluate how to place speech traffic on an internet. The VoIP designer must evaluate three key factors: (a) packet delay, (b) bandwidth requirements, and (c) computational effort.

Packet delay describes how long it takes to send the packet from the sender to the receiver. Two aspects of packet delay should be known. The first aspect is how long it takes to send the traffic from the sender to the receiver. The second aspect is the variation in time of the arrival of the packets at the receiver. The variation in delay is called jitter.
