Chapter 3 was devoted to a discussion of DSPs. Modern modems employ programmable DSPs. Previously, modem DSPs were read-only-memory (ROM) based. This approach required implementing new hardware for any upgrade or for the support of a new modem standard. Programmable DSPs allow changes, upgrades, etc. to be downloaded to the user device. Then from the user device, the upgrade can be loaded onto the DSP.
