We have reached a turning point in our study of VoIP. With the exception of the introductory chapters, most of the material thus far in the book has concentrated on individual pieces of the VoIP puzzle, and most of these pieces reside at the physical and data link layers of the layered model. The bulk of the information in the remaining chapters will focus on the upper layers, with the concentration on layer 3 (the network layer) and layer 7 (the application layer).
But before we delve into these other pieces of VoIP, it should prove useful to take stock of where we have been and try to put together the pieces of the puzzle—those pieces that have been examined thus far.
