The Internet was designed as a network to support data traffic. Its success stems from its (now) ease-of-use and its low-cost to access and transport traffic. As the need for multiservice networks grows, the need to "upgrade" the Internet becomes compelling, and much of the multiservice architecture is being put in place today. The ultimate challenge is to change the Internet (and other data networks) from a data-only service to a multiservice (multiapplication) architecture.
