Much work remains to be done on the development of standards for SS7-IP gateways. However, it is evident that the configurations explained in this section will be part of the final standards mix. For example, in Figure 10-1, an SS7 network is adjacent to subnetworks that run IP (labeled internets in the figure). The end-users are SS7, so the traffic being transferred between them is ISUP, SCCP, TCAP, etc. The SS7 nodes may be fully functioning Signaling Transfer Points (STPs), or endpoints, and the full features of MTP-3 are available, such as point code routing, and recovery from failed nodes and links.
