H.323 was released in late 1996 and, as we just learned, is organized around four major facilities: (a) terminals, (b) Gateways (which can perform protocol conversions), (c) Gatekeepers (bandwidth managers), and (d) multipoint control units (MCUs), responsible for multicasting. H.323 is a rich and complex specification. As of this writing, user and vendor groups are meeting to define a subset of H.232 to be used in internets and to expand the specifications of the H.323 Gatekeeper and H.323 Gateway to provide detailed information on internetworking with telephony systems—the subject of the next part of this chapter.
