This chapter explains how SS7, IP, and H.323 can act as partners to support telephony traffic in packet networks.[1] I mention IP here, but once again (as it is in H.323 and the MGCP), IP is a passive party in these operations, and is employed only as the protocol to forward the voice traffic after the connection has been established between the calling and called parties. SS7 and H.323 are responsible for the signaling and connection management operations.
