Due to the wide-scale use of Frame Relay, considerable effort has been made in expanding Frame Relay networks to support voice traffic. The Frame Relay Forum has published a specification for this process. It is titled, "Voice over Frame Relay Implementation Agreement—FRF.11".
The major components of this specification deal with analog-to-digital (A/D), digital-to-analog (D/A), voice compression operations, and the transmission of the digitized images in a Frame Relay frame. In addition to the transfer of the voice traffic, the frames can also convey data, and fax images, as well as the signaling needed to set up, manage, and tear down the voice or fax connection.
