The gist of MGCP is the issuance of commands to the Gateway and the Gateway acting on these commands and sending back responses. The purpose of the commands is to control the operations of the Gateway in regard to the creation and termination of connections, and to keep the Call Agent informed of events occurring at the Gateway's endpoints.
Eight commands are defined in the MGCP. These commands are described in two ways: (a) as an application programming interface (API) between a user application and the MGCP software in the Call Agent and Gateway, (b) as messages exchanged between the Call Agent and the Gateway.
