Not everyone is waiting for the ADSL and HFC standards to evolve, and the resulting deployment of these standards. Some companies are developing two product lines: (a) one based on the standards, and (b) one based on a proprietary design. Nortel is an example of one of these companies.
Nortel has introduced a high-speed modem to be deployed on the local loop. It is known as the 1-Meg Modem™ and it is designed to offer a high-speed data over voice over existing telephone lines. In addition, it does not require the rewiring of any customer site, and a POTS splitter is not needed.
