H.323 and the MGCP are considered the principal systems to support VoIP, but as we have stated, many other protocols must operate with H.323 and the MGCP to support Internet telephony. This chapter provides an overview of them. Like the VoIP gateway specifications, some of these protocols are not fully standardized, and the reader should keep in mind that working drafts are likely to change.
An entire book or several books can be written on this subject, and a companion book in this series is being written about these protocols. Our goal in this chapter is to develop a general understanding of these supporting protocols.
