There is a better way. It incorporates the attractive features of the IP platform with those of the PBX. The five configurations just described use the public Internet and/or the public telco to convey the voice signals between the two users. Another configuration, shown in Figure 1-4, uses a private intranet and/or leased lines instead of the Internet. This configuration also includes the PBX and key sets.
It is this configuration that can offer substantial cost benefits to the IP telephony user. First, the long-distance toll network is avoided.
