Google's HTTP(S) load balancers are extremely powerful, allowing developers to build globally available services capable of serving even the world's most demanding traffic loads. However, exposing any web service presents certain risks such as DDoS attacks. Making matters worse, because HTTP(S) load balancers perform layer 7 load balancing, traditional network firewall rules defined at the VPC are non-effective. In order to maintain scalability, any security measures to address these issues must be able to scale equally well.
