At the highest level, Cloud Spanner is organized into instances, which provide a logical grouping and control plane of a set of related Spanner resources. Most high-level operational tasks in Cloud Spanner are performed at the instance level, and all interactions with data are addressed to the instance as a whole.
Instances are available in one of two types of instance configurations: regional and multi-region. Instance configurations determine how data and compute resources and data are geographically replicated.
