In addition to machine types, developers can specify both the type and size of storage, both of which have a significant effect on the instance's maximum throughput and IOPS. Storage types include SSD storage and HDD storage. A single Cloud SQL instance can support up to 10,230 GB of storage, with the exception of shared-core machine types, which only support up to 3,062 GB.
Here is a comparison of SSD to HDD storage on Cloud SQL. Note that once created, an instance's storage type cannot be changed later. Also, because Cloud SQL does not impose any limit on queries per second (QPS), query performance is purely determined by hardware limitations:
