Companies have high hope that business process management (BPM) will enable
them to monitor and control specific activities, to predict future internal and exter-
nal states, to monitor state and behavior relative to its goals, to make decisions
within needed time frames, and to alter the firm’s overall orientation and behavior
(Figure 8.1). It can serve as a real-time system that alerts managers to potential
opportunities, impending problems, and threats, and then empowers them to react
through models and collaboration.
