April 30A Portion of Thyself

Rings and other jewels are not gifts, but apologies for gifts. The only gift is a portion of thyself. Thou must bleed for me. Therefore the poet brings a poem; the shepherd, a lamb; the farmer, corn; the miner, a gem; the sailor, coral and shells; the painter, a picture; the girl, a handkerchief of her own sewing.

Ralph Waldo Emerson—“Gifts,” Essays: Second Series (1844)

Thou must bleed for me—wow, that doesn't sound good at all.

But how do you share your gifts? Not a logo'd pen or a coffee mug, I suspect.

In fact, how much of your work, your gifts are still hidden from the world? Are you waiting to be discovered, to have a literary agent, angel investor, or art critic tell the world about your brilliance?

You're not ready yet, right? The problem is you never are, so start sharing your gifts now. Don't bring apologies, bring you—unfinished as you are.

Start by giving those you encounter the gift of your presence or even a silent word of thanks for who they are.

Share, honestly and openly, who you are and receive who others are with equal vigor.

Challenge Question

  1. What gift can you bring to the first person you meet today?
