June 27Much Madness
Much madness is divinest sense / To a discerning eye; / Much sense the starkest madness. / 'Tis the majority/ In this, as all, prevails. / Assent, and you are sane; / Demur,—you're straightway dangerous, / And handled with a chain.
Emily Dickinson—“Life,” The Collected Poems of Emily Dickinson (1855)
Do you ever have those moments when you feel as though you're the only one who gets it?
Kind of like mainstream thinking just doesn't work for you?
Of course, you've probably kept your mouth shut. Or maybe you've been labeled as dangerous.
“Assent, and you are sane”—give in to mainstream and you'll be seen as sane. How's that for an entrepreneurial admonition?
The good news is, this simply means you're an entrepreneur. Your purpose is to rock the status quo—or else what's the point?
That can look a bit meandering and pointless at times to those who witness your madness, but changing your mind is how you change the world.
